CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY IN THEOLOGICAL STUDIES

Outlines of lecture notes are issued and relevant texts are recommended. However, a considerable amount of Directed Study is required for some of the following courses.

PHI 501 PHILOSOPHY AND CHRISTIANITY'S UNIQUE CLAIMS

Three hours

This study considers the isms of Philosophy in the areas of epistemology, free will/determinism, body, mind, language, politics and science. The emphasis is on contemporary philosophy and the Christian reply and distinctive position.

PHI 502 LOGICAL FALLACIES

Three hours

This course involves an investigation of standard fallacies of argument as they occur in everyday speech and writing, particularly as they are used against Christian belief - e.g. reductionism, false dilemma, circular reasoning, etc. This provides guidelines for valid reasoning and appreciation of logical structures in Scripture.

PHI 503 PHILOSOPHY AND CHRISTIAN BELIEF 1

This course considers the major themes of Greek Philosophy prior to Christianity - Plato, Aristotle, Epicureans, Stoics, etc.; early Christian apologists' use of Greek philosophy; and Christian philosophy from Augustine to Aquinas and Scholastisism.

PHI 504 PHILOSOPHY AND CHRISTIAN BELIEF II

This considers modern philosophy, including ethics, beginning with Descartes and the rationalist tradition through Leibnitz, Spinoza, Lessing and Kant. It examines the empiricist tradition of Locke, Berkeley and Hume; the idealism of Hegel and others, and concludes with existentialism.

PHI 505 ETHICS & CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS I - BIBLICAL ISSUES

Three hours

This course considers Biblical foundations of ethical norms, as in the basic Creation ordinances, the Decalogue, and the Prophets. New Testament themes include a study of the Sermon on the Mount, and Jesus' teaching in the light of Jewish ethical thought. Themes in the Pauline Epistles, including conscience and the imitation of Christ, conclude the course.

PHI 506 ETHICS & CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS II -MODERN ISSUES

Three hours

This course includes issues in decision making, with specific examination of areas of contemporary relevance such as sexuality, divorce, abortion, social ethics, trade unionism, political responsibility, war, race and ecology.
