CHRISTIAN EVIDENCES:

APOLOGETICS

These studies may be undertaken as Theology, or Electives, or as arranged with ABC Faculty. See also Biblical and Theological offerings.

APO 501 HERMENEUTICS:
THE SCIENCE OF INTERPRETATION

Three hours

This course outlines basic principles for the proper interpretation of Scripture, considering symbolism and literalism, parables, poetry, and prophecy. Various approaches to Biblical revelation and inspiration are considered, together with evidences for the infallibility of the Scriptures. It also considers the approach of Jesus to the Old Testament Scriptures, and that of the apostles.

APO 502 INTRODUCTION TO APOLOGETICS

Three hours

This is an introduction to the field of Biblical Apologetics. It leads to a study of important issues such as the existence of God, the problem of pain, death and evil, miracles, the historical Jesus, and His resurrection.

DEATH AND GRIEF

Three hours

This course goes beyond APO 502, looking at one area (the problem of suffering) in some depth. It then considers the reality of death and grief. Hope is contrasted with despair.

NOTE: Other areas may be examined in this way under APO 530 Directed Study.

APO 504 MIRACLES AND THE SUPERNATURAL

Three hours

This goes beyond APO 502, examining in depth the philosophical, theological, and evidential bases for miracles and the supernatural in general, and Biblical miracles in particular. An examination of post-Biblical miracles is included, especially those claimed for patristic and mediaeval times.

APO 505 REVELATION AND INSPIRATION
OF O.T. SCRIPTURES

Three hours

Answers are given to supposed problems of the 0.T. Scriptures, showing how archaeological and other research has consistently demonstrated that "the Bible was right after all". Elaborate lecture notes are made available, but the candidate is also encouraged to personally research the evidence.

APO 506 REVELATION AND INSPIRATION
OF N.T. SCRIPTURES

Three hours

This a consideration of texts in N.T. writings on which there is light from archaeology and other modern findings. Such evidences do not "prove the Bible," for the Bible is above such proofs. Nevertheless they do point to the integrity of the N.T. texts.

APO 507 THE ORIGIN AND HISTORY
OF THE BIBLE

Three hours

APO 530 DIRECTED STUDY

Three hours

CHRISTIAN EVIDENCES:

ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE BIBLE

ARC 500 INTRODUCTION TO

This course gives "eye-witness" material relating to the sites of the Seven Churches as they are today and presents relevant spiritual teachings.

ARC 530 DIRECTED STUDY

Three hours

This may include specialized research along the lines of monographs provided by ABC and dealing with a wide range of subjects linked with Biblical Archaeology.

Archaeology throws light on cultures of Bible times, often clarifies Biblical language, adds additional information to backgrounds, endorses specific Bible incidents, supports Biblical prophecies when they are properly understood, and demonstrates the superiority of the Bible records. A useful mnemonic for lecturing purposes is as follows:

C Cultures and customs

L Language and words

A Additional information

S Specific stories and people

P Prophecies endorsed

S Superiority as written documents

CHRISTIAN EVIDENCES:

THEORIES OF ORIGINS

There is necessarily some overlap in these offerings. Some lecture outlines are provided but much of the material will depend on readings from prescribed text books. These courses do not purport to cover areas of science such as Physics, Botany, Biology and Geology except as they relate directly to the study of origins. The courses are intended as an outline for use by Church leaders.

CEC 500 THE CREATION/EVOLUTION CONTROVERSY

Three hours

"Creation/Evolution: Facts or Fairy Tales?" is the aptly named Clifford Wilson text used in this survey which considers the on-going controversy as to the origins of the universe and of life.

Three hours

General philosophies of origins are considered. Limitations of science are considered, as well as orderly patterns in the universe itself (e.g. the structure of matter, constellations, planets).

CEC 502 THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE

Three hours

This study builds on CEC 501. It zeroes in on the universe per se, dealing with such matters as the how and when of creation, dating, the formation of the stars, discoveries about the solar system, the environment, the earth's beginning, and its design.
